Athena

Libraries as a Community Hub

Problem: Libraries need to adapt to modern day to be better utilized by local communities.

Goal: Make libraries more relevant, essentials, modernized in the communities and what do they need to be offering to fulfill that purpose?

Target audience: Adults over 22 years of age, who are looking to build further knowledge and build necessary skills to help them:

  • Entering the workforce for the first time

  • Upskilling: advance their current careers

  • Reskilling: To change careers.

Competitive Analysis: We put together a competitor analysis, sent out surveys, collaborated on an affinity diagram.

Key Findings based on user interviews and survey:

  • Around half of our users visit their local library less than once a year.

  • Our users want access to relevant industry-specific events and resources.

  • Networking opportunities are a central focus for our users.

  • Our users are tech savvy and opt for a mobile-first approach.

Primary Personas: We built three primary personas, and focused on building everything for Elena.

Our Problem Statement:

Career starters and changers need a convenient way to access industry-specific resources and connections, so they can move into employment faster and build the foundations of a strong network within their chosen industry. This will enable the library to support the career progressions of its patrons and secure its role as a digitally inclusive hub.

Athena is a digital learning resource and networking platform powered by The British Library. Athena is an app that provides career starters and career changers with a convenient way to access industry-specific resources and connections.
