Latitude Food Allergy
Background
Latitude Food Allergy Care offers a clinically proven treatment process by desensitizing patients to their allergens through a long-term program where patient intake very small dosages of those allergens daily, a process called "dosing."
Treatment and longterm care for patients with food allergies.
My Role: 👩🏻🎨 UX Designer - 🎨 UI Designer
Got to work with another designer, four engineers, and a project manager.
What did the team at Latitude want to build?
A digital experience where patients can dose using a mobile application, and track any reactions patients might experience while dosing at home.
What was the problem they wanted to solve?
Make sure that their patients are accurately dosing everyday and tracking their reaction symptoms.
Observational Visits to the clinic to see how the user gets onboarded, how they go through their first OTP process, how they are monitored for first reactions, and how the medical team addresses severe and mild reactions.
Expert In-person interviews with the c-suite team and the medical team.
Video Calls with the patients/users while they take their daily morning dose.
SME Video Calls with patients about dealing with reactions.
Learnings from the medical team:Doses might change daily. Allergens don't.
Reactions are split into categories and need to be simplified and illustrated for the user to identify them.
Time is crucial - knowing when the patient is expressing the reaction.
The medical team always needs to be a click away.
Learning from the patients/ users:
Users weren't familiar with the medical terms.
We found out that the user is ready to get rid of the paper used to document their daily dosage and reactions.
The paper was often lost, forgotten while traveling, or too dirty to bring to the next provider appointment.
Overview I Patient
The medical team was left in the shadows in between clinic visits since they weren't able to see how the patient is reacting to the doses. This caused the medical team to intervene late when they should have intervened a lot earlier.
Overview I Medical
The patient dosing on the app wants to log in their allergens daily and get in contact with the medial team instantly incase any reactions rise.
Problem Statement Patient side/ user
The medical team wants to log in their patients allergens daily and monitor their intake and reactions and be able to contact them instantly in case of emergency.
Problem Statement Medical Team
Learning Experience
Patients learn about their treatment plans, what to expect on their next clinic visit.
Tracking Reactions
Timely tracking of the reaction as it happens to take the right measures right away.
Dosing On The App
The main feature of the app where the user look up their specific measurements for allergens and confirm taking them one by one.
The Main Features
Low-Fidelity Wireframes
Maybe this is too dry and professional, so we tried building a short prototype on the opposite side of the spectrum visually to test early on
…… but it didn’t go anywhere.
Character building of the allergens.
In an attempt to gam-ify the experience, we tested out having the allergens be characterized in cartoon like illustrations but during testing, the idea was not well received.
Our users viewed their allergen as 'scary' and asked for a more professional looking product.
Subjective Assessment
What might count as a severe reaction for one patient might count as mild for another.
When testing sliding scale, we got feedback from the medical team that we need
Other learnings from early on testings
What didn’t work out
Design System
We tested out different styles while keeping accessibility in mind.
Not all components were determined by now but we started shaping the foundation of the design system. We parted ways with the colorful/ gamified mood board and opted in for a more professional looking one like the user requested.
Mid-Fidelity Wireframes
Less screens, less clicks.
High-Fidelity Wireframes
What we learned
Users are the main compass to a project.
Listen to users before wireframing, while wirefaming, prototyping, during beta testing, and after launch.
Leave all assumptions aside.
Test it before investing in turning it to hi-fi.
Moving forward
Reiteration on the progress bar to celebrate the new wins and have them be visually clear on the bar.
For those kids who will continue working with Latitude, an opportunity for building for an extra persona who is the teenager dosing on their own.
Didn’t get the background? That’s ok!
Say you are allergic to hazelnuts, Latitude Food Allergy puts you on a long-term program where you keep on consuming hazelnuts in small amounts until your build tolerance for hazelnuts and stop being allergic to them.
